Este álbum é uma obra-prima do começo ao fim. Adaptação provocante de ELP da peça clássica de Mussorgsky, gravada ao vivo no New Castle City Hall em 26 de março de 1971, com algum makeovers extra. Claro que, muitos puristas clássicos mesmo depois de mais de 30 anos de lançamento deste álbum ainda não o aceitam, mas se você for um pouco mais compreensivo verá que na realidade é uma obra prima. Pictures at an Exhibition tem uma peformance, que captura Emerson, Lake & Palmer em momentos de refinamento e intensidade explosiva combinando com uma crueza etérea. Raramente eu ouvi esta combinação trabalhar tão bem especialmente em um desempenho ao vivo...

Aos 150 anos de idade, a mais celebrada marca de piano do mundo
é cultuada como uma jóia pelos músicos.

São raras as marcas que viraram sinônimo de um produto. Fotocópias? Xerox. Lâmina de barbear? Gillette. Piano? Steinway, e não se fala em outra coisa há 150 anos. Mas atenção: nenhum Steinway (pronuncia-se stainuêi) é igual ao outro. No ano passado foram construídos 2.465 exemplares na fábrica de Nova York. Outros 1.156 saíram de Hamburgo. Os modelos americanos têm um som mais grave e profundo. Os alemães emitem timbre cristalino. “Há um padrão Steinway, inimitável, mas cada um deles é como um filho”, disse à DINHEIRO o pianista brasileiro João Carlos Martins, reputado intérprete de Bach. “Há o intelectual e o esportista, o tímido e o expansivo”. Tratar o instrumento de madeira e ébano como gente de carne e osso é metáfora comum entre grandes músicos. A argentina Marta Argerich segue este diapasão. “Muitas vezes um Steinway toca melhor que o pianista.” Bach dizia o seguinte, no século XVIII: “O verdadeiro instrumento de teclado é aquele que tem o pulmão de um órgão e a clareza de um cravo.” Mas, afinal de contas, por que desde 1853 o Steinway, criação de um imigrante alemão de Manhattan, Henry Engelhard Steinway, não pára de reafirmar sua fama? O brasileiro Martins tem a resposta. “Nas obras rápidas de Bach, a tecla volta à sua posição original com a mesma velocidade com que desceu com a pressão dos dedos”, diz Martins. Nos anos 80, ele gravou as fugas e fantasias barrocas de Bach, num estúdio de Los Angeles, com um Steinway modelo D em cauda. Sete anos depois, numa regravação, exigiu que lhe fornecessem o mesmíssimo instrumento. Dono de ouvido musical acurado, Martins não quis se arriscar a fazer diferente – mesmo diante de um outro Steinway. O brasileiro, numa dupla tragédia para quem depende dos dedos, perdeu nos últimos dez anos o movimento de ambas as mãos – inicialmente numa partida de futebol e depois em decorrência de um acidente vascular cerebral. A distância forçada do piano o aproxima ainda mais do Steinway. “Não há sonoridade igual”, diz. Paga-se bem por ela. Um Steinway para concerto, resultado da manipulação, ao longo de nove meses, de 12 mil peças diferentes e oito tipos de madeira, custa US$ 96 mil nos EUA. Por conta de impostos desembarca no Brasil a US$ 150 mil. Há no País, cerca de 80 unidades. Além de investimento musical, onipresente nas grandes salas do mundo, é bom negócio financeiro. Na última década, um piano usado valorizou quase três vezes mais que um carro Mercedes. Acrescente-se história a uma grife adorada por pianistas como Vladimir Horowitz e Sergei Rachmaninoff, e os valores vão à lua. O Steinway tocado por John Lennon em 1971 na gravação de Imagine foi comprado pelo cantor George Michael por US$ 2,1 milhões. É um valor espantoso, sabendo-se que o faturamento da Steinway em 2003 foi de US$ 165 milhões. É a mágica de um mito.

GENESIS - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974)

"So Selling England By The Pound is No1. Do not be fooled by this. Genesis did 3 albums worthy of 5 stars: Trespass, Foxtrot & The Lamb. The Lamb has musical depth as well as lyrical. It is light years better than Selling England. Is this a prog site? Or is this a place for people congratulating themselves over predictable, commercial, easy going, middle of the road mediocrity. Do not let any fashion, fool or lazy notion get in the way of strong passions. Much of The Lamb (eg The Lamia) engages your emotions to a very high level. Peter Gabriel uses his full range of feelings on this album. This is one of the classic prog albums. Selling England is just okay.

STRAWBS - Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios (1970)

"One of the better British progressive groups, The STRAWBS were a 60's folk and medieval band turned prog-rock with the help of Dave COUSINS (the heart and soul of this group) and Rick WAKEMAN "master of the keyboards". WAKEMAN is featured on the albums "Strawbs", "Dragonfly", "Just A Collection of...", and "From The Witchwood" before he joined YES. The line-up for the group changed markedly over the years. Their sound has been in a state of constant evolution combining English folk and progressive sounds to form their unique style. Critics seem to have a preference for the STRAWBS in the early Seventies when the group consisted of Tony & John HOOPER, John FORD, Richard HUDSON and keyboard virtuoso Rick WAKEMAN. The group ceased to exist at the end of the 1970s, and COUSINS embarked on some solo projects. STRAWBS would appeal to fans of bands like FAIRPORT CONVENTION, STEELEYE SPAN, PENTANGLE, etc.They have recorded over 15 albums through the years, with various lineups around the core of Dave COUSINS who offered beautiful melodic compositions. Every STRAWBS album between "Witchwood" and "Nomadness" has something unique to offer. A perfect introduction to the sound of The STRAWBS is the compilation-CD "A Choice of Strawbs" (16 tracks). It features all their best material from their most creative and "symphonic" period (between ’71 and ’74). The music of The STRAWBS frequently ranges from folky (acoustic guitars) and classic (piano and harpsichord) to bombastic, symphonic rock (fiery electric guitar and glorious Mellotron in the vein of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST and The MOODY BLUES). The vocals are powerful with a lot of expression. Another great introduction to The STRAWBS is their live CD entitled "In concert" with BBC recordings from ’73 and ’74, including compelling renditions of their best works. The lush Mellotron sound evokes every time goose bumps on my skin!

"Times may have been hard for Rick when this album was recorded but you would never have guessed it from sense of peace and tranquility that comes from these pieces of music. Forget the "New Age" tag that will probably deter a lot of people from buying this - this is superb solo piano music. No flash or bombast here - just Rick and a Grand Piano. The result is charming and peaceful - yet it reamins an involving collection of music unlike the usual insipid, Muzak wallpaper that you normally find in "New Age". Some of Rick's undoubted spirituality seems to shine through here too and this really is a record that you will find will refreshing and uplifting. It always makes me feel good! If you have not heard any of Ricks Piano works this is a superb place to start. Give yourself a treat and track this down You will not be disappointed.

Notes: This was a digital re-record and in retrospect I should never have done it. The only reason was that the original company who had Country Airs went bankrupt and they wouldn't sell me the original back. Digital pianos had just arrived at the time and I thought it would be a good idea to record the album again on one. I can now look back and honestly say it was a huge mistake.
Wakey's Verdict: Forget I ever recorded it please!
Little Known Trivia: All the original music for Country Airs and music notes mysteriously had gone missing and so I had to sit with the original recording and try and recall as much as I could exactly what I had done on the original.

ESTRELAS CELESTES, ESTRELAS HUMANAS

Olho para o céu e vejo estrelas.

Parecem infinitas, parecem estarem longe.

Mas, estão aqui, brilham em milhares de pontos do meu corpo.

São estrelinhas importantes e que assim como as estrelas do céu, fornece-nos calor, luz, alegria e sentimento puro, inspirando-nos a chegar mais perto de Deus.

No céu elas são chamadas estrelas, aqui embaixo elas se chamam chakras.

O estudo desses milhares de pontinhos luminosos nos é fundamental, importante e essencial nos estudos de natureza cósmica.

Somos corpos iluminados, dentro de corpos mais densos, mas nem por isso, menos iluminados.

Agradeça seu corpo físico, esse maravilhoso veículo que lhe conduz em suas mais diversas jornadas.Você deve aprofundar seus estudos em si.

Descubra o universo divino em seu corpo, nas estrelinhas chamadas chakras.

Não reclame do cansaço, nem pense que seu caminho terminou.

Saiba que você é uma criança cósmica, filho de Deus, irmão de outros bilhões de seres cósmicos de diversas dimensões.

Você deve estudar com afinco e dedicação.

Faça música, cante, mas não se esqueça do amor.

Esse imprescindível sentimento deve crescer e transbordar a todas as criaturas do universo.

Seja feliz, ilumine suas estrelas e brilhe como o sol.

O Todo está em você.
